Fillings and Bonding

Chances are if you are an adult living in the United States, you will probably have a cavity at some point. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control reports that 9 out of 10 American adults over the age of 20 will have at least one cavity in their life. Those who leave the decay untreated ultimately end up with even bigger problems than a simple filling.

Although we have come a long way in reducing the risk of cavities, as well as the number of people who experience cavities, dental “caries” is still one of the most prevalent dental health issues people experience.

Filling cavities is a common occurrence for most dentists, and Avenue Family Dentistry is no exception. Dr. Paul Perez and Dr. Elizabeth Crapanzano believe that just because you need a filling, your tooth should not be permanently marred by a dark, amalgam filling. Composite fillings are now available, and they will blend in beautifully with the natural shade of your teeth so no one will even know they are there.

Tooth-Colored Composite Fillings

Amalgam fillings, which are a blend of various metals, were used successfully for many years. Technology has improved dramatically, however, and we now have the ability to create strong and beautiful restorations. Most cavities can be filled using a composite material. This material, available in a variety of shades, blends so well that it matches the natural shade of your teeth. Whether the filling is in the back of your mouth or in the front, no one will be able to spot it, even if you smile or laugh.

In addition to their superior esthetics, composite tooth-colored fillings have these advantages over amalgam fillings:

  • Composite fillings allow us to retain more healthy tooth structure.
  • Unlike amalgams, composite fillings do not contain mercury. Even though the FDA has approved the safety of mercury in dental fillings, there are still people who prefer an alternative.
  • Metal fillings are more susceptible to temperature changes that can cause them to fracture.

Cosmetic and Restorative Bonding

Because composite filling material is so versatile, it is a good option for correcting many esthetic and structural issues with your teeth. It is used for a procedure called dental bonding, which is less costly than veneers and can be completed in just one visit to the office.

Dr. Perez and Dr. Crapanzano can fix the following issues with dental bonding:

  • Areas of discoloration
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Short or eroded teeth
  • Small chips and cracks
  • Unusually shaped teeth
