Extractions

We are in the business of protecting teeth! Even so, sometimes a tooth may require removal if it is severely decayed or if it has an infection that is resistant to treatment. Teeth may also need to be extracted for orthodontic purposes or in preparation for dentures.

Avenue Family Dentistry also provides the service of wisdom teeth extraction. Removing wisdom teeth becomes necessary when the teeth are prevented from erupting properly in the mouth. Early removal is recommended to prevent future problems.

If you find that you need an extraction, you can be comforted by the fact that our dentists are skilled and gentle, ensuring your comfort every step of the way.

Do I Need an Extraction?

While it’s true that dentists generally try everything within their power to save a natural tooth, in some cases, a tooth might be in such bad shape that a filling, crown, or root canal won’t be enough to save it. An extraction might be your only option—particularly if leaving the tooth in is threatening damage to healthy teeth.

Regardless of the reason for needing an extraction, you can rest assured that Dr. Paul Perez and Dr. Elizabeth Crapanzano at Avenue Family Dentistry have done many of them, and they have the experience to ensure your treatment will be as comfortable as possible. We even offer oral sedation for those patients who feel extreme anxiety about their procedure.

Removal of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth refer to our third, final set of molars that come in after the rest of your adult teeth. They usually don’t appear until people reach the age of about 17 to 25 years old.

Not all wisdom teeth require an extraction. If they grow in at an odd angle, crowd your other teeth, or cause discomfort, we may recommend their removal. If you keep your wisdom teeth, it is important to be diligent about taking care of them. Because of their location, they are particularly challenging to keep clean and are more susceptible to decay.

The Importance of Self-Care After Your Extraction

Regardless of which type of extraction you have had done, it is critical that you follow our instructions for self-care afterward. Smoking and drinking through a straw are not recommended; both activities can dislodge the blood clot that is forming at the site of the extraction, causing unnecessary complications. Be sure to take any prescribed medications, and feel free to give our office a call if you have any questions or run into any problems!

If a tooth does need to be extracted, there are several options to replace the missing tooth. The different replacement options are an implant, a bridge, or a partial denture.  Dr. Perez and Dr. Crapanzano can discuss the best replacement option for you!
